The Company Since the 1950s, Wallenius Lines has been a leader in the ocean transportation of vehicles and other rolling cargo. In recent years Wallenius Lines has expanded its transportation concept to include land-based transportation and services to offer its customers door-to-door services.
In July 1999, Wallenius Lines merged its deep-sea transportation services with those of Wilhelmsen ASA, of Norway, forming a new company: Wallenius Wilhelmsen A/S. Operating more than 70 vessels, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is the world's leading operator of roll-on/roll off (RoRo) vessels.
Since the formation of the new company, Walleniusrederierna AB's (Wallenius Lines) primary function is ship management. Wallenius Lines currently owns and manages a fleet of 33 Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels, 16 of which sail under the Swedish flag. The vessels are chartered to the marketing company, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines, in which Wallenius has a 50 percent interest.
Wallenius Lines has grown from a small shipping company, operating small coastal tankers, to a global organisation offering total transport and logistics solutions. Wallenius Lines is a leader in the development of new solutions for vehicle transport, including both cargo handling and new types of vessels. By 1999, Wallenius was transporting over a million vehicles a year.
The Challenge The main goal of the IT department is to provide the organisation with solutions and tools to enable the company to meet the changing demands of today's business and create new directions and angles of approach. The Wallenius skilled work force must have the tools necessary to stimulate the intellectual capital and provide added and improved value to the business.
As a very intensive business with frequent travel, the natural choice was to include a service that all Wallenius business travelers have in their suitcase at all times - the phone.
The Solution The company had a long-established and successful working relationship with Fenestrae using its fax and telex gateways. When the Wallenius Lines decided to provide the organisation with new cellular phones, the choice fell to WAP phones. The IT department was the primary mover in making the decision, with consultation with top management. The decision to choose Fenestrae's mobile solutions was made at the end of 2000.
Fenestrae's business partner, TenFour, assisted in implementing the system, which took about half a day to accomplish. The implementation went without a hitch.
"We conducted a brief investigation of the market to find a wireless solution to our need for accessibility to our corporate data. The most important consideration was the seamless integration with our existing mail structure, Microsoft ® Exchange™. It became clear that Fenestrae was the only one that could provide us with such a solution off the shelf".
Wallenius has benefited from Fenestrae's mobile solutions because it enables Wallenius's employees to be in contact virtually anywhere, anytime, with both voice and mail. Wallenius uses Nokia ® WAP phones exclusively. Ultimately, Palm Pilots™ will also be used to access information remotely. Currently up to 100 Wallenius employees use the Fenestrae's mobile solutionss, though that number will increase to as many as 250 in the future.
"Although still in limited use, expectations are running very high. We have every reason to expect excellent results and positive reactions from our business partners and our employees".
Also Wallenius, are active users of Fenestrae's other product offering Fenestrae Faxination Server. Over 200 people at their Stockholm head office use Fenestrae Faxination Server to send and receive their faxes and telexes.
