Changing usage of Fax over IP

In the last two years there has been a significant growth in the usage of Media Gateways in combination with the Fenestrae Communication Software. This development is mainly driven by end users wishing to migrate their fax servers into virtualized environments.

However, many Fenestrae clients still use intelligent fax cards which cannot be directly accessed from within a virtual environment in most cases.

In order to completely virtualize the Fenestrae solution our customers have begun replacing their existing fax card(s) with the Fenestrae Fax-over-IP (FoIP) connector. When customers have an IP-based telephony infrastructure (which also supports T.38 via SIP) then they can simply configure the Fenestrae FoIP connector to interface with the IP PBX/SIP Gateway.

If the telephony infrastructure does not support T.38 it is still possible to completely virtualize the Fenestrae server using a media gateway appliance.

How do FCS and Media Gateways enable virtualization of the fax server?

The Fenestrae Communication Server is installed in a virtual environment along with the Fenestrae FoIP connector. The FoIP connector communicates with the media gateway the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The media gateway functions as a bridge between the T.38/SIP session and the PSTN or ISDN telephony system while enable the Fenestrae solution to remain completely software-based and therefore easily virtualized.

Which Media Gateways?

The Fenestrae Fax over IP connector is officially recognized and certified by both AudioCodes and Dialogic – two market leaders in the media gateway field.

Advantages Fenestrae & Fax over IP

  • Reduction in telephone costs due to the usage of IP networks instead of using the public telephone network
  • Reduction in the number of telephone and fax lines
  • Reduction in the usage of fax machines, paper and toner

Advantages of virtualization

  • Servers, applications and data becomes more flexible
  • Better access to servers, applications and data

Advantages of server consolidation

  • Increased number of applications per local server, leads to an optimized usage of the hardware
  • Higher availability: In case of a local server breakdown the virtual machine can be restarted on another server

If the organization movies to a voice-over-IP telephony environment in the future, it is a simple matter to reconfigure the Fenestrae FoIP software to communicate directly with the IP/PBX environment.
