Systec is a leading Norwegian IT-business firm with roots dating back to 1987. Although the company has achieved considerable growth and now offers a wide range of IT-based services and solutions, Systec has always remained loyal to its original strategy: to deliver excellent service and maintenance. Systec's customers include the six local governments in Hallingdal, and Drammen’s dept. of Schools and Education’ In 2005 Systec acquired Alfa Data, a Norwegian hosting business that caters mainly to small and medium sized companies. Due to requests from their clients and Alfa Data's own wish to deliver state of the art solutions for their customers, the company developed a hosted Microsoft® Exchange™ service that went live in September 2004.

The challenge:

Systec’s vision was to extend ’on the go’ e-mail and calendar functionality to every mobile device, regardless of platform. This would not only fulfill requests from several clients, but would also help differentiate Systec’s Hosted Exchange offering from the competition. Furthermore, Systec would then be able to create added value for its Hosted Exchange business. Roger Pedersen explains: ”Hosted Exchange is almost a commodity service. We operate on narrow profit margins in a market with fierce competition. By extending the regular Hosted Exchange environment we will be able to generate additional revenue streams. To us, this makes good business sense and our clients will profit from advanced new functionality.”

The Solution:

With Fenestrae Mobile Data Server Sync Edition, users can seamlessly integrate their mobile device into their business e-mail infrastructure. They will always have their current calendar and contacts at hand and they can receive e-mails while on the go. Fenestrae Mobile Data Server Sync Edition is an Exchange synchronization solution that makes use of the standard SyncML protocol for information transfer between the mobile device and the Hosted Exchange environment. As nearly all modern mobile phones support SyncML, no installation of software is needed on the client device. In addition, provisioning and configuration of the user’s mobile phones can be done remotely using SMS messages without any user actions required. This means that customers are up and running in no time. Moreover, as the solution is so easy to set up, the Systec helpdesk expects very little extra effort in terms of client support.

The implementation of Fenestrae Mobile Data Server Sync Edition was a straightforward affair, as is the maintenance. Roger Pedersen says: ”Together with Fenestrae we installed and configured the server in three days. Mobile Data Server is very maintenance friendly, we can do it ourselves. Not that it needs much of our attention. Since the installation the service has been running smoothly. This is especially nice because it helps keep the TCO down.”
